Dear Friends of Opossum Lake,

On Tuesday, April 18th, 20 members of the Friends of Opossum Lake Conservancy Steering Committee held a very productive and enthusiastic organizational meeting. We now have a tax ID number, a bank account, and are on the way to becoming a Pennsylvania non-profit membership corporation (501[c]3).

Our first membership/informational meeting will be Thursday, May 18th at 7:00 PM at 1205 Easy Road, Carlisle. We are asking each of you to become a committed member of the Friends of Opossum Lake Conservancy through contribution of annual membership dues of $10 per individual or $15 per household. These contributions will help cover mailing, copying, and general expenses. Donations beyond the basic membership dues are also welcome and will assist us in funding projects and generating matching funds for grant applications. A copy of our membership application and dues schedule is enclosed (or attached). You may either send your application and dues to Friends of Opossum Lake Conservancy at the address below or bring your completed application to the meeting on the 18th. Please contact Karen Heishman at lwrfrankford@aol.com or Cindy Criswell at (717) 486-8904 if you need additional copies or information.

In addition to monetary donations, we’d appreciate any time and energy you and your family could donate to help with future activities, both to improve the lake environment and to assist with fundraising activities to return the lake to its former beauty. Please come and join us.

You may also want to consider volunteering to be a board member or signing on with one of our committees. We know that it takes a lot of thought and effort to step out of your comfort zone and commit to an organization such as this, but we strongly believe the benefits will be worth the effort.

Our first membership event will be a trash pick-up day on Saturday, April 29th, 9:30 AM at Opossum Lake. We will be collecting trash from around the main boat launch and from the lake bed whenever possible. In addition to the clean-up of the area, we are actively planning a number of future enhancement projects, fund raising efforts, and legislative/grant initiatives to repair the dam and restore the lake as quickly as possible. If you are unable to attend the meeting on May 18th, please contact Karen Heishman at lwrfrankford@aol.com to have a membership application emailed to you. If you do not have access to email, please contact Cindy Criswell at (717) 486-8904 to have an application mailed to you.

If you have access to email and have not included your email address on our mailing lists, please reconsider. Email will help us reduce the costs of keeping you informed. Your email address will be used only by the Friends of Opossum Lake to distribute information and will not be shared with any other individuals or organizations.

We hope to see you on both April 29th and May 18th!
